Horticultural leader

Frederick E. Roberts, Delaware '71M, director of Longwood Gardens, received the George Robert White Medal of Honor from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society at ceremonies in Boston last fall. The gold medal was presented in recognition of Roberts' career as a leader and pre-eminent professional in the field of public horticulture. A graduate of UD's Longwood Program, Roberts has dedicated his talents to the growth and development of Longwood Gardens since 1984. There, he manages 1,050 acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows with 11,000 different types of plants divided into 40 indoor/outdoor areas, including such diverse attractions as four acres of greenhouses, a 2,000-seat outdoor theatre, a ballroom with a 10,010-pipe organ and hundreds of fountains. The gardens attract 800,000 visitors a year from across the world.
