At Delaware, Employees Give More Than Their Time

Gwendolyn Davis works hard as an executive secretary in the
University's Office of Admissions.
But, she contributes more than her time and effort to the
University. She's one of 716 employees who supported various
programs and projects during F.Y. 1994-95.
"I give because I believe in the University of Delaware, and
most importantly, I believe in our students," Davis says. "This
is my way of saying that I want to do a little bit more for the
students-just a little something of myself to become a part of
their success."
Davis supports the College of Education to honor her son,
Jimmie, Delaware '92, and daughter, Lindsay, Delaware '98, both
education majors.
For Donald Puglisi, contributions to the University are a
way of saying thanks. "The University has been very good to me
over the past 25 years," says Puglisi, MBNA America Business
Professor of Finance. "It's like a family. My contributions allow
me to repay the University." Puglisi also has established the John
F. Puglisi Scholarship within the College of Business and Economics.
In honor of his father, the $5,000 award is presented each year to
an outstanding B&E senior.
Payroll deductions are just one of the ways that employees
can contribute to the University, reports Joseph W. Bradley, director
of annual giving. "Employees can give to specific project
campaigns or to scholarships, too," Bradley notes. "It's a very
important way to help students." During F.Y. 1994-95, Bradley
says, employee contributions totaled $330,908.
The Delaware Diamonds-a group of more than 500 donors whose
members have made or pledged gifts of $5,000 or more over a five-
year period-now includes 85 faculty and staff members, says James
J. Dawson, director of major gifts in the development office.
"Gifts received from those who know us best are in so many ways
the most satisfying ones to receive," Dawson says.
