University of Delaware Office of Public Relations The Messenger Vol. 5, No. 1/1995 Recognition: A Special Report For These Parents, Fund Raising Promises a 'Second Youth' Although they have four grown children, Raymond and Jean Hartman of Glen Ellyn, Ill., just can't let go of their youth. That's why they agreed to serve as co-presidents of the 1995-96 Parents Campaign for the Delaware Annual Fund. "It gives me a chance to have a second youth-a second opportunity to participate in what's happening today at a major university," Ray Hartman says. "The campaign also gives me a direct opportunity to influence my child's education in a significant way, other than simply paying a tuition bill." The Hartmans say they hope their efforts will benefit all University students, including their daughter, 21-year-old Rebecca Jean Hartman, Delaware '96. A history major, Rebecca plans to look for work as a museum historian, maybe even for the Smithsonian Institution. "Why not?" her proud father asks. "Shoot for the moon, that's what I tell my kids." Both Ray and Jean spent considerable time attending university classes during their 'first youth.' They earned undergraduate degrees from Loyola University in Chicago. Jean, now a school nurse, also received a master's degree from George Williams University. Ray, a vice president for Beatrice Foods, went back to Loyola for a law degree. Last year, 1,790 parents of current and former students gave $849,625 in support of academic programs, career services, library resources and scholarships. For example, an "Applications of Technology" fund supported the start-up of Student Life TV, featuring upbeat, humorous programs that entertain and educate students. Roughly 50 percent of last year's gifts were earmarked for the University's Initiative Fund, which supports a diverse array of new and current programs, reports Joseph W. Bradley, director of annual giving. Along with the Hartmans, this year's campaign committee involves 35 families, including President and Mrs. David P. Roselle. Members represent seven states.
