Laureate named

Daniel Nathans, Delaware '50, the only University graduate to win
a Nobel Prize, became interim president of Johns Hopkins University in
Baltimore in June. A native of Wilmington, Del., Nathans shared the
1978 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work using restriction enzymes,
laying the groundwork for the present worldwide effort to map the
human genome. After graduating from the University summa cum laude,
with distinction in chemistry, Nathans went on to receive a medical
degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1954. A member of
the Hopkins faculty since 1962, he will lead the university during its
search for a new president and an ongoing $900 million fundraising
initiative. Nathans said he would not be a candidate for the permanent
post. In 1993, he received the nation's highest award in science-the
National Medal of Science.
