New course offered in community development

A new certificate course in community development was launched in
Wilmington, Del., this fall by the College of Urban Affairs and Public
Policy.
The semester-long course, which is held in Neighborhood House
Inc., a 67-year-old community organization in Wilmington, features
lectures by 35 professionals in the field, drawn from nearby states
and Washington, D.C.
According to coordinator Raheemah Jabbar-Bey of the college's
Center for Community Development, participants will learn how to
establish an efficient and locally controlled enterprise that can
support profitable ventures and effective social programs.
Participants also will be able to assess community needs,
evaluate community development enterprises, learn how to organize the
community, understand and generate financial reports, decide how to
finance development projects and negotiate with public and private
funding agencies.
The course will be offered again next fall.
