Messenger - Vol. 3, No. 2, Page 7 Winter 1994 Orthodox icons An exhibition of 37 Orthodox icons from the collection of Leslie M. Burgess and Dr. Sarah Jastak-Burgess, Burgess-Jastak Foundation, will be presented through April 15 at the University Gallery at Old College. Created for liturgical cult and personal devotion, the Orthodox icon tradition has roots in Greco-Roman portrait commemoration. Usually paintings on specially prepared wood panels, icons are used in both church and home. The emphasis of this collection is on 19th-century Russian icons, with Bulgaria and Greece represented by one icon each. Concurrently, selections of the 116-piece collection of amber given to the University by Dr. Sarah Jastak-Burgess and Leslie M. Burgess will be shown in the West Gallery. The University Gallery, located on the second floor of Old College, is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 1-5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. For tour information, call (302) 831-8242.
