Old traditions sport new looks

Yoohoo, YoUDee
YoUDee, the new University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hen, made its
debut this fall before an enthusiastic crowd of 15,000 during halftime at
the Delaware-Lehigh football game in Delaware Stadium. The formidable fowl,
created by Real Characters Inc. of Atlanta, stands 6 feet, 8 inches high
from the top of its comb to the soles of its 28FF sneakers and has a
wingspan measuring 6 feet, 1 inch. YoUDee's great-great-great-grandfather,
Col. George W. YoUDee, distinguished himself in the Revolutionary War and
was cited for bravery in battle. Capt. John Caldwell, commenting after the
Battle of Trenton, said, "There's no yellow streak in that chicken. He's
blue to the bone." The colonel was given a gold medal of valor, so blue and
gold now serve as YoUDee's official colors.

Uniformly splendid
The University of Delaware Marching Band sports new uniforms this
fall. The royal blue jackets with tails bear the interlocking UD logo and
are set off by blue and gold reversible capes, gold cummerbunds and topped
by black patent leather shakos. The drum major wears a contrasting white
uniform trimmed with blue and gold, while the guard captain sparkles in
sequins.
