Messenger - Vol. 3, No. 1, Page 12 Fall 1993 On Campus Old traditions sport new looks Yoohoo, YoUDee YoUDee, the new University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hen, made its debut this fall before an enthusiastic crowd of 15,000 during halftime at the Delaware-Lehigh football game in Delaware Stadium. The formidable fowl, created by Real Characters Inc. of Atlanta, stands 6 feet, 8 inches high from the top of its comb to the soles of its 28FF sneakers and has a wingspan measuring 6 feet, 1 inch. YoUDee's great-great-great-grandfather, Col. George W. YoUDee, distinguished himself in the Revolutionary War and was cited for bravery in battle. Capt. John Caldwell, commenting after the Battle of Trenton, said, "There's no yellow streak in that chicken. He's blue to the bone." The colonel was given a gold medal of valor, so blue and gold now serve as YoUDee's official colors. Uniformly splendid The University of Delaware Marching Band sports new uniforms this fall. The royal blue jackets with tails bear the interlocking UD logo and are set off by blue and gold reversible capes, gold cummerbunds and topped by black patent leather shakos. The drum major wears a contrasting white uniform trimmed with blue and gold, while the guard captain sparkles in sequins.
