Eight hundred free ice cream cones were passed out Sept. 22 at the Newark Dairy Queen to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the cone, an American icon. Here, co-owner Elmer "Butch" Read, AS '72, '75M, a retired school teacher, passes the creamy treat to a delighted Rylea Long of Bear, Del. According to Read, Newark's Dairy Queen, located at Route 4 and Marrows Road, holds a worldwide company record for selling the greatest number of gallons of ice cream per year. Read is married to Elizabeth Goddin Read, CHEP '69, '71M, who supervises UD student teachers for the Christina School District
