Last fall, 42,000 middle- and high-school students from across the United States joined "Extreme 2002," a virtual field trip to hydrothermal vents in the Pacific Ocean. The innovative program, led by UD scientist Craig Cary and the Marine Public Education Office, was supported by the National Science Foundation, WHYY-TV and the MBNA Foundation.
