From credit cards and chemicals to pharmaceuticals and psychology, speakers in the 2002-03 Chaplin Tyler Executive Leadership Lecture Series have offered insights into a wide range of business topics.
Speakers during the fall semester were Charles (Chad) O. Holliday Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of the DuPont Co., and Richard Vague, co-founder and CEO of the all-Internet bank and credit-card provider Juniper Financial. The spring semester featured talks by Richard E. Boyatzis, professor and chairperson of organizational behavior at Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management, and Donald D. Bell, president of Siegfried (USA), which manufactures active pharmaceutical ingredients and formulated drug products.
Boyatzis, who holds master's and doctoral degrees in social psychology from Harvard University, is the author of numerous articles on human motivation, self-directed behavior change, leadership, value trends, managerial competencies, power and alcohol and aggression. He has written books on management and professional education, and he most recently co-authored the best-selling Primal Leadership: Realizing the Power of Emotional Intelligence.
His March lecture at UD was titled "Developing Leadership Without Emotional Intelligence Is Like Dancing Without Rhythm."
Bell, scheduled to speak in early April, was recruited in 1999 to head Siegfried's U.S. business turnaround. His efforts are credited with transforming the company, which faced severe regulatory and financial problems, into a successful enterprise.
The annual lecture series is free and open to the public. It is dedicated to UD benefactors Chaplin and Elizabeth Tyler and honors their commitment to education and to helping young people succeed in business.
