Tsu-Wei Chou, P.S. du Pont Chair of Engineering, has been honored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) with its Worcester-Reed Warner Medal, which was awarded during the 2002 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in November.
The medal is given to individuals who add to the permanent literature of engineering. Chou, who is chairperson of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the literature in analytical modeling, processing science and damage mechanics of fiber composite materials. He is the author of more than 250 archival journal papers and book chapters, as well as several books on composite materials.
A member of the UD faculty since 1969, Chou is a founding member of the Center for Composite Materials. In September, he became the first P.S. du Pont Chair of Engineering, endowed by the Unidel Foundation to honor the memory of industrialist and philanthropist Pierre Samuel du Pont.
Chou is a fellow of ASME, ASME International, the American Society for Composites and the American Ceramic Society and is an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
In 2001, he received UD's Francis Alison Award as an outstanding faculty member.
Chou's research involves materials science and applied mechanics, including the macrostructure of polymer, metal and ceramic materials. Most recently, his research focuses on nanocomposites.
