Chance's new book a real 'Plus' for Delaware football fans
From his seat in the press box, long-time Delaware Stadium public address announcer Elbert Chance has called nearly every touchdown and field goal and announced every victory and defeat over the past 50 years.
Drawing on his experiences above the field, his personal connections with UD coaching staff and his keen interest in the popular fall college sport, Chance has written the definitive history of Fightin' Blue Hen football. The hardbound volume, One Hundred Plus: The Story of Delaware Football, contains more than 120 photographs and accounts of 35 captivating games, plus updated statistics, anecdotes and a fair share of analysis.
Chance, who retired from UD in 1985 as director of alumni relations, was the announcer at Delaware Stadium since it opened in the early 1950s until his retirement at the end of the football season. Fourteen years ago, he authored One Hundred Years of Delaware Football while serving on a committee planning a season-long observance of the centennial of the game on the Newark campus in 1988-89.
"This new book," Chance said, "is much more thorough, and contains about 40 percent more material than the first one. After all, we had to include information on 13 additional seasons." Also, he said, during his two years of research on the new volume he discovered errors and omissions in existing records, such as incorrect scores, unrecorded games and names of coaches who had not previously been identified.
"For anyone who enjoyed Delaware football over a period of time, this book is an absolute must," according to retired head football coach Tubby Raymond.
