Outstanding needs:
Critically important to the research, teaching and community outreach efforts of the College of Health and Nursing Sciences (CHNS) are quality faculty members. Funding for the establishment of endowed professorships is key to recruiting, supporting and retaining outstanding faculty and talented scholars. CHNS is the only college at the University without an endowed professorship.
Endowed scholarships are equally important, as a means to attract the most talented students to CHNS. While the College has some endowed funding for scholarships for Delaware residents, there is a critical need for funding to help support out-of-state and returning adult students.
CHNS recognizes that its continued success depends on its ability to expand and grow in new directions. Physical infrastructure--in particular, scientific laboratories--provides the framework for the creation of research-based knowledge and the education of students who will be the health-care professionals of tomorrow. It has become essential to raise endowed funds for equipment and laboratory expansion.
Fields that are increasingly significant in the health arena are the areas of gerontology, obesity and the health and exercise sciences. Research and programmatic support in these areas is crucial to enhance service-learning opportunities for the College's students. And, while major individual donors remain extremely important to the College, corporate and foundation identification and solicitation continues, as the College places more emphasis on enhancing research activities.
