Outstanding needs:
The University of Delaware Library is in need of funds for special book endowments, which can be used in the discipline or subject interest of the donor's choice.
Other needs are for a fund for the endowment of an electronic database of journal articles and funds for rare books and manuscript materials.
Recent examples of generous donors making a difference in the Library:
- The Ellen Brady Tober Graduate Assistant Fund was established by her husband, Frank W. Tober, in her memory. The fund provides the Library with money each year for a graduate assistant to coordinate small archival collections and assist in processing Special Collections materials.
- The Web of Science, [www2.lib. udel.edu/database/websci.html], is an electronic database that provides faculty and students online access to the Institute for Scientific Information "Citation Databases." Funds for the Web of Science were made available through the support of the late Judge Hugh M. Morris and the Unidel Foundation.
- The Melva B. Guthrie bequest brought $3 million to the Library upon her death. The funds have been used as major support for electronic equipment, Special Collections materials and other needs. This recent bequest was added to an earlier bequest of Mrs. Guthrie, also of $3 million.
- The Marvin B. Sussman Asklepios Fund continues to receive contributions and assists the Library with the acquisition of interdisciplinary books that link social, behavioral and humanity sciences with the natural and physical sciences, using a holistic approach.
- The Henry Newton Lee Jr. Family Library Music Fund, established by Henry and Jane Lee, supports the acquisition of Library materials in the field of serious/classical music written after 1900.
- The Roxana Cannon Arsht Archive, the gift of the Hon. Roxana Arsht, includes the papers, memorabilia and historic materials of the Arsht and Cannon families.
- Ronald M. Finch, builder and holder of a world-class collection of Delmarva history, will bequeath his collection of books and materials.
- The Thomas R. Carper congressional papers, documenting his career in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983-92, were given to the Library. Sen. Carper, BE '75M, has announced that his senatorial papers also will be donated.
- The Sir Joseph Gold Beckett collection of more than 3,000 items devoted to the Nobel Prize-winning playwright Samuel Beckett came to the Library. The collection includes first editions and bibliographically significant editions of books, play scripts, periodicals, theatrical ephemera and other materials.
- Prominent Delawarean Leon DeValinger Jr. donated his personal papers, dating from 1924, to the Library. The archive is a rich source for Delaware history and preservation and reflects the interests of this prominent Delawarean.
