Outstanding needs:

The College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy offers its 2,500 students many opportunities beyond the classroom to engage in service learning and applied research through the 10 public service and research centers affiliated with the College.

CHEP seeks scholarship funds to support the academic work and financial needs of its talented graduate and undergraduate students, giving them the opportunity to embark on a journey of learning and understanding. Gifts for student scholarships and awards can be designated to any department or school in CHEP.

A new fund-raising effort is under way to support the Early Learning Center, a comprehensive facility designed to have a dramatic, positive effect on the quality of early childhood education in the state of Delaware. The new facility will offer services for children and their families, technical assistance and training for the child-care industry, a laboratory for research in many disciplines and service-learning opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students from across campus. Funding of $1.5 million over three years is sought to cover the start-up costs of the new center, which is expected to be self-supporting in its fourth year of operation.

Recent examples of generous donors making a difference in CHEP:

• The Aramark Corp. endowed the Aramark Chair in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, currently held by Fred DeMicco, chairperson of the department.
  
  
• Alumna L. Sandra Hammonds, CHEP '87, and her husband, Bruce L. Hammonds, established the Hammonds Professorship in Education, currently held by Carol Vukelich.
  
  
• The Ratledge Family Fund for Delaware Public Service will provide recognition to a UD community member--staff, faculty or student--who has made an outstanding contribution of public service to Delawareans.
  
  
• Mr. and Mrs. Gerret van S. Copeland gave the Copeland Vinotek, a state-of-the-art wine storage facility, to Vita Nova, CHEP's student-run restaurant on campus.
  
  
• Numerous endowed funds for student support have been created, including the Theodore S. Beck Scholarship, Joseph J. and Judith Ann DeStefano Scholarship, Milton and Mary Edelstein Scholarship, William B. Keene Scholarship, Pauline E. Loessner Memorial Award, Wallace H. Maw Scholarship and James H. Sills Jr. Scholarship.
  
  
• Friends of the University gave an endowment to establish the Emily L. Phelps Director of The College School.
  
  
• The Walton Jones Foundation awarded a major gift to the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy.
  
  
• The Laffey-McHugh Foundation has made a leadership gift to the Early Learning Center.
  
  
• The W.W. and Alice Marriott Foundation created the Marriott Center for Hospitality and Tourism, a state-of-the-art classroom for teaching, professional training and research.
