The Campaign For Delaware: A progress report
Donors' generosity enhances the future of education
With innovative educational programs, cutting-edge research, service to the broader community and technological support for its activities, the University has gained significant momentum over the past decade as it makes its mark as a top-notch institution. To sustain that momentum, the Campaign for Delaware was launched in October 1998--the first comprehensive effort for private support in UD's history.
The Campaign goal, set at $225 million, was surpassed last year through the generosity of friends and alumni. The initial goal was based "in part on the perception of what the University might be able to raise," President David P. Roselle has said. "Our experience is that our friends want to help us more fully address the University's needs and opportunities."
Roselle says he is confident that, when the five-year term of the Campaign ends, the fund-raising total will far exceed the original goal.
"We are also confident that we will then be able to report a host of institutional improvements that are the direct result of the generosity of the alumni and friends of the University," says Robert R. Davis, vice president for development and alumni relations.
The areas targeted in the Campaign include support for students in the form of undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships, support for faculty in the establishment of endowed faculty chairs and funds for young scholar-teachers, support for such academic programs as discovery-based learning initiatives, and enhanced facilities and equipment.
