Campaign for Delaware goal: $15.45 million
Gifts and commitments as of Aug. 1: $22.1 million
Outstanding needs:
While the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources has surpassed its minimum goal for the Campaign for Delaware, there continue to be unmet needs, particularly in such areas as facilities, professorships, fellowships, scholarships and research and Cooperative Extension.
New buildings include the Plant Growth Chamber Facility. Equipment for the facility is expensive, and the College is now in the process of equipping it. In addition, plans are under way to create a new Research and Education Center near Georgetown, Del., and funding for that facility also is being sought.
Professorships are important for attracting and retaining faculty who are considered extraordinary teachers or researchers. Today, several faculty in the College are deserving of the title and prestige that accompany a named professorship.
Research and cooperative extension funds are vital in supporting efforts to evaluate and resolve today's environmental and agricultural problems.
Recent examples of generous donors making a difference in the College:
- Elbert N. and Ann V. Carvel have committed $2 million toward building a new Research and Education Center near Georgetown, Del. The building, expected to cost $6 million, will help the College accommodate an expanding staff and the latest technologies required in today's research.
- A $1 million gift from the Unidel Foundation has created the endowed S. Hallock du Pont Chair in Plant and Soil Sciences. Donald Sparks, chairperson of the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences and previously the T.A. Baker Professor of Soil Chemistry, was named to the new chair, effective Sept. 1.
- The Dr. Paul Sammelwitz Scholarship Fund was established by Gene Pratt, AG '68, to honor his former professor's retirement after 40 years of teaching. Pratt's gift, matched by his employer, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, launched the fund and spurred gifts from other alumni.
- The $8.5 million Charles C. Allen Jr. Laboratory in Newark, Del., one of the world's premier facilities for poultry disease research, was built with the help of grants and donations from the federal and state governments, the Delmarva poultry industry and a personal gift from Charles C. Allen Jr. of Allen Family Foods.
- A scholarship that honors the memory of farmer Clifton A. Murray is awarded annually.
- The G. Joachim Elterich Fellowship provides research support to students from abroad. The first endowed fellowship in the College funded by an individual, it was established by Elterich, who is professor emeritus of agricultural economics and who will match, 5 to 1, every contribution made by his former students.
