Analytical Questions

These are some of the questions and issues raised by the Common School movement:

  1. Who should control schooling?
  2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of local control? State control?
  3. Should all children learn a common curriculum?
  4. Should schools attempt to deliberately teach values?
  5. If so, are there certain basic or “common” values that are necessary for a society to function well?
  6. How should values be taught?  Is it acceptable to “indoctrinate” children in certain values?

You need to be able to articulate how educators and educational reformers in the 18th and 19th century answered these questions.

You will also be asked a question relating to the feminization of teaching.
