Ginza Crowds, 1925 |
After the post-Earthquake reconstruction, Ginza-cruising mobo ("modern boys") and moga ("modern girls") rejoined the older businessmen in the modern spectacle that this cosmopolitan and trendsetting heart of Tokyo had become by the 1920s and 30s. The resprouting of this modern urban life and its ever-changing forms prompted Kon Wajirô and Yoshida Kenkichi to undertake a project of observing, noting, and sketching the new fashions, customs, and manners of the passing crowds (lecture for Tuesday 3/12). From counting the number of men wearing moustaches to sorting cigarette butts, Kon and Yoshida aimed to excavate modern urban life as it happened.
