An Asakusa Review, circa 1929 |
Shows resembling anything approaching "opera" in Asakusa Opera gave way to "reviews" after Asakusa was rebuilt following the 1923 earthquake. The Asakusa review is said to have started on July 10, 1929 at the Casino Folies, which was actually on a back street in the Fourth District, away from the main theater street. It was on the second floor of an aquarium that was next door to an insect museum, which prompted writer Kawabata Yasunari to note in his Scarlet Gang of Asakusa: "It came to be that the girls of the Casino Folies passed the fishes in their tanks and turned in by a model of the sea king's palace to go to their dressing rooms." |
