Here is a layout for a formal oiran dôchû. Besides kamuro and shinzô, an oiran would be accompanied by various other Yoshiwara employees when conducting a formal parade. Wakaimono (young man) was a male attendant of any age who provided a variety of services at brothels and teahouses. The yarite was the female supervisor of the brothel. Bringing up the rear were members of the teahouse that served the brothel and professional entertainers called geisha and taiko. Geisha had been majority male prior to the mid-18th century, but female geisha rose to prominence by the 1780s. Taiko were strictly males who provided companionship for visitors. |
