In the play Sukeroku , Bearded Ikyû makes a scene with his power and money, which Sukeroku counters with a tongue-lashing and then physical pounding--all the while cutting a cool figure in his chic black silk kimono, scarlet silk underskirt, and trademark purple headband (faded in this print). Although played in "rough style" Sukeroku is no rough neck; his demeanor is polished and taste is impeccable, embodying the essence of edokko iki (chic, savoir-faire).
