Map of Asakusa Area, present day

The east end terminus of the Ginza subway line deposits you in Asakusa, a major center of popular entertainments in Edo-Tokyo, then and now (see PopSite 4). Today's icon of Asakusa, the Kaminarimon or "Thunder Gate" (two blocks west of the station), opens onto the tourist-crammed Nakamise Dôri, a narrow pedestrian street lined with trinket and food vendors leading to the incense-and-pigeon-filled grounds of Sensô-ji temple. For some typical tourist shots of these places of and by yours truly, click on their names on the map.
