A True Picture of a Trading House in Yokohama, 1861

"True" should be taken with a grain of salt since it is unlikely that women would have been playing the traditional Japanese New Year's game of battledore and shuttlecock across from this trading house. The depiction of the game, however, does mark this print as a seasonal New Year's print executed by Hashimoto. Besides the black servant and his goat rolling a barrel down the street, the most interesting part of this print is probably the upper center panel where the western merchant oversees his Chinese agent bargaining in sign language with a Japanese customer wishing to purchase some of the merchant's raw silk that is stockpiled in back. Japanese and Chinese employees work in the room to the left where a western accountant keeps the books.
