Warriors & Buddhists

Guide

Engaging Vision #3 is closely tied to Engaging Act #3. It consists of two main parts:

  1. A glimpse at part of the mid-13th century Heiji monogatari emaki (The Tale of Heiji War Scroll), which depicts the Heiji Conflict (1159-60).

  2. An examination of the main concepts of Amida (Jôdo, Pure Land) Buddhism and samples of the art it inspired.

First, look at the excerpts of The Tale of Heiji War scroll that I've pieced together. You will have to make sure your browser window is sized large enough to view the captions and navigation buttons at the bottom of the scroll. Then view the five details I've provided. Make sure you ponder the question asked in Detail #5.

Then, get a crash course in the basics of Pure Land (Jôdo) Buddhism by accessing a Pure Land Buddhism website and the visions of hell that I have reproduced for your didactic pleasure.

Enter the Heiji War Scroll by clicking on Minamoto Yoshitomo's head to display a menu on the left and then navigate from there beginning with "Heiji Scroll."

Enter Buddhist Basics and Hell by clicking on Amida's head to display a menu on the left and then navigate from there beginning with "Basics."
