The museum houses one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of early American artifacts -- architecture, painting, sculpture, decorative arts, folk art and the practical arts -- displayed in gallery settings and 175 period rooms. Emphasis is on American arts before 1860 and early imports from Europe and Asia. This collection is particularly strong in ceramics, furniture, glass, graphics, silver and textiles.
