The EIIP Tech Arena featured a session entitled "Emergency Management Content and Collaboration: Incident Master Portal Fills the Gap." Dr. Jim Morentz, CEO of Essential Technologies, Inc., was the guest speaker. Dr. Morentz is an internationally recognized expert in the development and application of new technologies for environmental and emergency management.

Dr. Morentz discussed and demonstrated Incident Master that combines contingency and emergency management applications with an ever-changing Content and Collaboration Portal. The Incident Master Portal brings analytical tools, exhaustive maps and data sources, educational materials and training, emergency management professional forums, near-real-time event data, and daily features from around the world to the desktop.

James W. Morentz, Ph.D., is the originator of the first computerized information management software for personal computers to help corporations and governments respond to unexpected events and emergency incidents. Developed in 1981, the software quickly emerged as the de facto standard for state and local government emergency management in the United States, and now is used by thousands of emergency response organizations worldwide.

In the years since that pioneering technological breakthrough, Dr. Morentz has continued to build a reputation in the IT sector by constantly refining and expanding on his original software package while developing several other products and information management strategies.

The success in crisis management, combined with a growing demand for tools for environmental regulatory compliance, ultimately were the major catalysts for the development of Essential Technologies, Inc., the leading provider of Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) and Contingency Management software. An internationally recognized expert in the development and application of new technologies for environmental and emergency management, Dr. Morentz was instrumental in the creation of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after the event at Three Mile Island in 1979. His technological solutions to environmental and emergency management have led to his expert testimony before the House Committee on Science and Technology, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, and the House Subcommittee on Y2K Infrastructure Protection.

Dr. Morentz received the Computerworld Smithsonian Award for "Visionary Use of Information Technology" in 1991 for the fields of Environment, Energy and Agriculture. He holds a Ph.D. in Communications Research, Technology and International Affairs as well as an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania. He received his B.A. from The American University's School of International Service.
