Medical Laboratory Science is associated with the prevention, diagnosis and therapy of disease through the understanding, application, and performance of clinical laboratory analyses. The major clinical sciences within medical laboratory science are medical microbiology, clinical chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, and molecular diagnostics. Medical laboratory scientists perform routine and complex analyses, often utilizing sophisticated biomedical instrumentation. They are responsible for the accuracy of their results and are expected to correlate interdependent test results and physiological conditions. Their work may include supervision and teaching. Most medical laboratory scientists are employed in hospital laboratories. The remainder work chiefly in other health agencies, industrial medical or biomedical laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, and research or forensic laboratories. The B.S. degree in medical laboratory science includes courses in basic sciences, liberal arts and clinical sciences, and also off-campus clinical experience. Graduates are eligible for the national certification examination as medical laboratory scientists through the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) and for career entry. This major also provides a basis for graduate study in medical laboratory science or related areas such as clinical chemistry, microbiology, or management and for professional school education including medicine, dentistry, and physician assistant.
