CISC474 Project P04, Spring 2007

Introduction

Today's group activity has two purposes:

  1. Increase and Reinforce knowledge of Unix, CSS, Java and SQL. All four of these are needed in order to write web applications. Today, your group will acquire expertise in three or four of these areas.
  2. Provide an opportunity to interaction with folks outside your numbered group. Though you'll start in your groups today, you won't be there for the entire class—so don't get too comfortable.

Step 1 (10:10-10:15) Understand the plan (silently)

Read through this page COMPLETELY, not just step 1.

Then, look over the questions. Decide if you are happy with your topic assignment, or if you want to negotiate a trade.

Step 2: (10:15-10:20) Discuss. Assign topics to group members

The default assignment is this. Consult the numbered teams page if you don't remember your "card".

clubs CSS
diamonds Java
hearts SQL
spades Unix

However, you may negotiate and trade if you don't like the topic you've been assigned. You might decide to go with the group where you have the most expertise, or you may decide to go with the one where you are feeling weak, and need to develop your skills. It is up to you.

Step 3: (10:20-10:25) Move to new groups

Find your new table. The eight tables are assigned as follows:

CSS groups 1-5 CSS groups 6-10
Java groups 1-5 Java groups 6-10
SQL groups 1-5 SQL groups 6-10
Unix groups 1-5 Unix groups 6-10

Step 4 (10:25-10:35) Divide up the questions

Divide up the questions among the 4 or 5 people in your new group. You can work individually, or in pairs. Post answers to the questions on the wiki pages setup for that purpose.

If you need wiki permissions, ask your TA or instructor to set you up.

Grading: 100 pts

10 pts per question. The grade will be assigned to the entire group, so help each other out.

You'll be given some class time on Monday to make adjustments before the grading happens, but try to get the final results looking as good as possible before class on Monday.

Due: Final grading will happen after 3PM Tuesday afternoon (02/27).

If you don't finish in class, finish up by email.
If results are posted by 3PM Tuesday 02/27/07,
no late penalties apply.
