Required Textbooks and Materials

You need two textbooks, and one smart card:

Details

(1)  Absolute C++, 2nd Edition, Walter Savitch
ISBN: 0-321-33023-4  Addison-Wesley, 2006

New copies of the book may come bunded with "Code Mate" access. Code Mate access is useful, but not required—it gives you access to some additional study materials, and an online copy of the textbook.

An alternative to a paper book is to buy a standalone subscription to Code Mate, which gives you online access to the textbook as a PDF file. This only costs $24, which is a lot less money than a paper book. For details, visit: http://www.aw-bc.com/codemate/

(2) Either Just Enough Unix, 5th Edition or Visual QuickStart Guide: Unix, 3rd Edition

If you already purchased Just Enough Unix from a previous class, there is no need to purchase an additional book. If you have not already bought a book, the Visual Quickstart Guide is less expensive, and presents the same material, but it is organized more clearly, and is probably a better match for the needs of this course.

(2a)Just Enough Unix, 5th Edition, Paul K. Andersen.
ISBN: 0-07-295297-0 McGraw-Hill, 2006

Either the 5th edition (shown) or the 4th edition (not shown) will do. You can get online access to the 5th edition for around $36, a lot cheaper than buying a paper book. See http://ebooks.primisonline.com Click on "McGraw-Hill Ebooks", then "Next", then "Science Engineering and Math", then "Computer Science". It will be the first book on the list.

(2b) Visual QuickStart Guide: Unix, 3rd Edition , Deborah S. Ray and Eric J. Ray
ISBN: 0-321-44245-8, PeachPit Press, 2007

List price for print copies of this book is $24.99—about 1/3 the list price of the Andersen book—yet this book is organized more clearly, and more of the book is relevant for the purposes of this course.   An electronic copy is also available from PeachPit press for $17.99.

(3) Smart Card for Sun Rays (available at bookstores that sell UD textbooks for around $6-7). You need this for efficient access to the Sun Ray terminals and for accessing your Sun Ray session during office hours. I'll say more about this in lecture.
