Details

(1)  MATLAB, by Holly Moore
ISBN: 0536404976, 13-digit ISBN: 9780536404978
Prentice-Hall, 2007 (Custom E-Source book).

This is our main text for the first part of the course, and is a comprehensive introduction to programming in MATLAB. The emphasis of the course will be MATLAB programming.

(2) C++ Programming: Visual QuickStart Guide, Larry Ullman and Andreas Signer
ISBN-10: 0-321-35656-X; ISBN-13: 978-0-321-35656-7;
Published: Dec 16, 2005; Copyright 2006; Dimensions 7 X 9; Pages: 528; Edition: 1st.

We will use this textbook to cover a brief introduction to C++, which will be a secondary theme in the course. We will cover just enough C++ so that you can see how the MATLAB skills you have learned help you in learning another computer language. We'll also cover enough C++ so that students will be well prepared if they choose to continue the study of computer science with CISC181.

(Note that CISC181 is taught in C++ and is a required course for Electrical and Computer Engineering Majors, Computer Science Majors and Minors, and Math majors, among others.)

An electronic copy of this book is available from PeachPit press for around $16-18.

(3) Visual QuickStart Guide: Unix, 3rd Edition , Deborah S. Ray and Eric J. Ray
ISBN: 0-321-44245-8, PeachPit Press, 2007

This book covers basic Unix commands. Unix is the operating system for the central computing systems used at UD for programming courses. So, an important goal of this course is for all students to be comfortable using Unix.

An electronic copy of this book is available from PeachPit press for around $18-20.

(4) Smart Card for Sun Rays (available at bookstores that sell UD textbooks for around $6-7). You need this for efficient access to the Sun Ray terminals and for accessing your Sun Ray session during office hours. I'll say more about this in lecture.
