Title: Splatter Plots: Yet Another Graph
Links: slides and excel file.
The graphical display of information has always been a challenge and opportunity for statisticians, and there are myriads of kinds of graphs for display all combinations & permutations of quantitative & qualitative data. However it is difficult to display quantitative data from different sources and with different meanings in an easy to understand graphic. For example, summarizing all of the results of a clinical trial requires displaying a wide variety of data in the context of the objectives of the study (eg, a statistically significant, but clinically insignificant study outcome is as much of a failure as an outcome that would be clinically significant if only it had been statistically significant). Synthesizing concepts from traffic lights, targets & Tolstoy, I propose a variation on radar plots which is: Easily interpreted, compared, and contrasted; Comprehensive and reducible; Flexible and expandable; And clearly distinguishes successes from failures at an appropriate level of precision.
